Advanced Polyhedral Materials

Flextegrity, Inc. makes possible advanced polyhedral materials that anticipate and meet the comprehensive demands of civil engineering applications, disaster-resistant housing, environmental solutions, and revolutionary product designs. The foundation of Flextegrity’s intellectual property is a unique and innovative icosahedron and truncated icosahedrons tensile architecture for assembled structural materials called “C6XTY.” In later patents the work has […]

Mathematical Model of Icosahedral Materials

by Mark A. Martin, Ph.D. August 2006, © Flextegrity, Inc. 2006, 2007 Introduction An icosahedral material is a regular threedimensional array of icosahedra held together by a repeating pattern of flexible interconnecting bands. Each interconnecting band attaches to exactly two icosahedra and each icosahedron has up to 12 bands attached to it, depending on its position […]

Stress Analysis Icosahedron Beam

Finite Element Stress Analysis of Icosahedron Beam by Ross Engineering, Prepared for: Mr. Sam Lanahan, Flextegrity Abstract This is a stress analysis report for the Icosahedron Beam. The analysis was performed to compare a beam constructed of the Icosahedrons fabricated of Aluminum to a standard Wood beam. The predicted deflections are similar, while the component […]

Omni-extensible Anisotropic Topologies

In this article we present Flextegrity’s patent – arrays that vary anisotropically, omni-topologically, creating myriad hybrid materials. Arrays and lattices Micro-Structured Materials can be thought of as new ‘raw’ material resources, and combined with macro- molecular shapes to create hybrid materials. Arrays continue that hierarchical sequence resulting from combinations of materials, micro– and macromolecular shapes, […]

Compression Study of Open Faced Icosahedron

ICOSAHEDRON COMPRESSION STUDY Introduction and Background: The project started with an initial compression model of a symmetric icosahedron array modeled after a sheet steel structure. Analysis results indicated that the compressive load carrying capacity of the structure is dominated by the connecting ligaments. That is, under compressive load, the connectors want to buckle and irreversibly […]

Nanoscale Biological Icosahedral Structures

In nature, identical, spontaneously assembling protein subunits tend to form symmetrical, minimum-energy shapes. Certain shapes are well-suited for microbiological tasks and persist within organisms. One shape that occurs in several contexts is the icosahedron. A common feature among the icosahedral structures found in microbiology is that they control permeability. Some of these structures, in viruses, for example, may be nearly impermeable, protecting their contents from damaging outside influences and allowing small entities with limited genetic resources to construct viable outer casings.

Creative Visions

Materials and design, whether in architecture or consumer products, are inextricably interwoven and co-influential.  As Patrick Kruithof so aptly states in Future Materials, “It is up to manufacturers to develop these new materials. It is up to designers to transform them into things that have meaning, like ink flowing on the paper of a love […]
